Zip Northrup in Fair Haven
John Henry Northrup, known to many as "Zip," was the grandson of Solomon Northup, author of book 12 Years A Slave. Zip was well known in Fair Haven as a player and coach for the Fair Haven Baseball Team in the days before there was a "color barrier."

Just before midnight on Saint Patrick's Day, March 17, 1955 Harold Wallace smelled smoke. He and his family were living above the store he owned on Main Street at the corner of Fancher Avenue. Today this is the location of new store he built after the fire.

1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic
Current events seem to bring history closer to home, as does walking through one month in Fair Haven during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. My grandfather’s first cousin, Libby Hills, grew up in North Fair Haven. She died from influenza at age 24, leaving her husband with two small children to raise. In the fall of 1918 the schools and the movie theatre in Fair Haven were closed. Church services were suspended.

William L. Blaisdell
William L. Blaisdell of Martville, the last surviving veteran of the Civil War from Cayuga County died at his home on February 13, 1941 after a five week illness. Comrade Blaisdell was 94 years of age.
