Bluff Names – There is a separate page regarding the bluffs. Sitts Bluff, McIntyre Bluff, Chrysler Bluff, Cooper’s Bluff, Scotts Bluff, etc.
Brick Block – The Mendel-Hitchcock Brick Block was completed in 1876. It housed three store fronts on the northwest corner of Main Street at Richmond Avenue. Among the wooden storefronts in Fair Haven, it was the only commercial building built of brick and thus it was often referred to simply as the Brick Block. The second floor was known as Central Hall where meetings of various kinds were held. It was removed in the 1960s.
Chengerian Lane – Off of Lake Street Extension north of 13th Street. When and how did this lane get this name?
Finch’s Corners – The four corners created by the crossing of Finch’s Corners Road and State Route 38. Sometimes spelled Finches Corners or Fintches Corners. Named for John and Sally Finch who lived here in 1850 with their eight children. By 1860 they had moved to Ira. Today, Finch’s Corners Road leads to this corner from the east and west. Originally, the name applied to the section from Martville to Finch’s Corners and the road west from Finch’s Corners was first known as Gulf Hill Road. Seeking a mention in print earlier than 1906.
Gulf Hill – A knoll south west of Finch’s Corners. Sometimes referred to as Gulf Hills. The western end of Finch’s Corners Road west of Finch’s Corners was once known as Gulf Hill Road or Gulf Hills Road. How it got this name is still to be discovered.
Hartwell Hill – As Finches Corners Road leaves Martville going west from State Route 104, it climbs Hartwell Hill.
Little Sodus Creek – see Sterling Creek
Michigan Woods – The last and largest stretch of virgin forest to be logged in Sterling. Bordered by Town Line Road (State Route 104) on the south, McGibbons Road )and State Route 38) on the east, Finch’s Corners Road on the north and on the west by Wright Road and Humphrey Road.
Peckville – Per Ray Sant, this was a camp set up circa 1886 for workers at the Gilford sawmill in the southern area of the Michigan Woods where “ten or twelve families” lived. “Here were two barns for the oxen and horses, bunkhouses for the men, a mess hall and the mill itself. ”
Pelham – (see Sterling Valley) Pelham was once the name for the hamlet of Sterling Valley. It is possible that this name change was considered when the Pelham Post Office in Winchester County was established in 1849. Our Post Office was later established as Sterling Valley Post Office in 1862. It has been speculated that it was named by an early Sterling Valley settler who came from Pelham, Massachusetts. This settler has not yet been identified. Another story is that a Native American who built a bridge across the creek here was named Pelham and it became known as the place where one could cross the creek using Pelham’s Bridge.

Sacketville – This was once the name for the hamlet at Sterling Center. It appears in the 1836 Gazetteer of the State of New York. Why this was changed to Sterling Center has not yet been determined. Often names were changed if they conflicted with the name of an existing Post Office in New York State, though Sacket’s Harbor should not have been similar enough to cause this change. No explanation for the origin of this name as yet been seen.
Sterling Creek = (aka Little Sodus Creek, Stirling Creek) Before the Township of Stirling was named, this creek was known as Little Sodus Creek, due to it draining into Little Sodus Bay by way of The Pond. Sterling Creek has two branches that converge in an inaccessible area between McIntyre Road and Juniper Hill. The southern or “western branch” flows from Victory through Martville to Sterling Center. The northern or eastern branch sometimes called Sterling Valley Creek flows from Hannibal through Sterling Valley.
Sterling Pond = Known to locals as simply “The Pond,” it is sometimes referred to as Sterling Pond due to Sterling Creek flowing through it. At one time referred to as Mitton Pond for the last owner of the Mitton Tavern situated on the point between The Pond, Lake Ontario and Little Sodus Bay. This pond is today entirely withing the boundaries of Fair Haven Beach State Park.
