Description
Over the past 30 years I have collected more photos than would fit in volumes 1 & 2 of this series on Fair Haven. In this 3rd volume I chose images pertaining to Fair Haven’s railroads and its harbor on Lake Ontario. The area on the bay shore where ships and trains came together to exchanged cargo became known as North Fair Haven. In search of a title, it seemed the natural place to start in understanding this part of Fair Haven’s history.
It has been interesting to sort through these images and notice what is revealed when placing them side by side. Cottages are added or moved, lighthouses come and go and the passage of time can be seen in the saplings that grow into mighty elms and maples. I’ve pointed out some of the things I have found interesting.
Did you know Little Sodus Bay on Lake Ontario was once a lively shipping port that served as the terminus for the Southern Central Railroad? Today its lighthouses are gone, but remnants of Fair Haven’s past can still be found if you knowing where to look.
This book follows the development of the harbor and the railroad that once thrived here. This collection of over 600 photographs serves as a guide to recognizing what remains and provide a glimpse of what once was.
