Before television, before radio, people got their news from newspapers. Some read a paper every day and some read it once a week. Some read it out loud to their families around the old potbelly stove.
Would you enjoy reading the paper? This project is designed to create an index to people, places and events about Fair Haven that are mentioned in historic newspapers.
Beginning with the first issue of the 1890 Fair Haven Register,
we need volunteers to occasionally read an old issue and enter the names mentioned into an index. This index can then be sorted and searched for research purposes. This timeline of Fair Haven will reveal many interrelated stories.
Proof-readers are also needed to clean up transcriptions of specific article of interest. Eventually everyone could use the index to locate people and topics of interest.
This index will be combined with the indexes from the Deeds Project and the Census Project to contribute to the Timeline of Fair Haven History.
Help launch this project by working on the first few newspaper pages as an example for others to follow in re-reading the papers our forebearers read.
